Is Microsoft going to use WebKit as their Rendering Engine for IE?

Posted by: Fritz Thomas In: Open-Source

No, it is not April the first! According to a report by TechWorld, a student asked Steve Ballmer on a Developer Conference in Australia:

“Why is IE still relevant and why is it worth spending money on rendering engines when there are open source ones available that can respond to changes in Web standards faster?”

Steve Ballmer replied:

“That’s cheeky, but a good question, but cheeky,” Ballmer explained that Microsoft would need to consider the future of the browser and determine if there is any lack of innovation for the company to capitalize upon with ‘proprietary extensions that broaden its functionality.’”

“Open source is interesting, Apple has embraced Webkit and we may look at that, but we will continue to build extensions for IE 8.”

Yes, i know – that sounds not if Microsoft is going to release IE8 with the WebKit Engine, but i think it is a right step. We will see what the future will bring us.
